The OSSM Summer Academies are one-week residential academic enrichment camp for high school students who are interested in science and math. Campers attend exciting classes taught by the OSSM nationally renowned faculty. They also take part in fun afternoon field trips and evening activities. The OSSM Chemistry department has added a sophisticated, state-of-the-art Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) instrument at the Samson Science and Discovery Center. The implementation of benchtop NMR analytical instrument will substantially empower the school's organic chemistry laboratory teaching and research curriculum. Sophisticated instrumentation requires in-depth training, which is exactly what Dr. Rahman received this week. The company is developing the world's first true commercial solar-powered drone, which has significantly more payload than other solar-powered aircraft. On Wednesday, April 28, a group of OSSM students visited the local Ronald McDonald House to tour the facility and to provide them with about $800 they raised for the charity. Osamah Mian, OSSM class of 2016, is a biomedical engineering senior at the University of Oklahoma and is helping develop low-cost ventilators for local hospitals in the Oklahoma City metro. He works with a handful of physicians and engineers to make ventilators that will hopefully cost less than $300 and can be assembled with "off the shelf" parts. Because its a boarding school, OSSM students don't get a traditional "snow day." That doesn't mean they don't enjoy the snow, though, and that's exactly what they did on Wednesday. It's the most wonderful time of the year: college application submissions. Last year, OSSM students were accepted to 88 colleges and universities across the United States and matriculated to 27. Twenty-two Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics (OSSM) seniors have been named semifinalists in the 2020 Competition for National Merit Scholarships. More than 16,000 semifinalists were identified by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation in the 65th annual program. Save the Date of Saturday, Oct. 19, for International Night. The event, held in the Great Hall, features food, dances, music, clothes, games and languages of different cultures around the world. At OSSM, it is the largest event of the year sponsored and run by the Parents' Association.
Lieutenant Governor Matt Pinnell was on campus Monday. Mr. Pinnell is the 17th Lt. Governor of OK and also serves as Secretary of Tourism and Branding. OSSM is funded each year by the state legislature, and support of key government officials is important.
Demonstrating its ranking as a top public high school, OSSM experienced its highest enrollment for an incoming class for the fall of 2019. On Sunday, June 30, OSSM honors the 36th anniversary of HR1286--legislation that established the academic institution. Signed by Governor George Nigh and Secretary of State Phipps, the legislation was codified in the Oklahoma Statutes as Section 1210.401 of Title 70. Michelle McCargish, Ph.D., was named 2019 Oklahoma History Teacher of the Year, an award sponsored by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. OSSM's 28th graduation will be Saturday, May 25, @ 10 a.m. The ceremony will be held on the south side of the Oklahoma State Capitol. Seniors described their experiences at the Annual Mentorship Symposium on Saturday. Four OSSM students and their coach traveled to Washington DC on Thursday to participate in the National Science Bowl Competition from April 25 through 29.
