OSSM Student Sylvana Wins First Place for Pancreatic Cancer Research Presentation
OSSM Senior, Sylvana K. (Stillwater), recently took home first place for her high school research presentation on pancreatic cancer at the 2024 Biological Stain Commission Annual Meeting, held at the Stephenson Cancer Center in Oklahoma City. Competing among top high school presenters, Sylvana’s award is a testament to her dedication and passion for advancing research in a crucial medical field.
Her presentation focused on innovative methods of imaging pancreatic cancer cells, conducted under the mentorship of Dr. Lacey McNally, Professor of Surgery at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. The project involved advanced techniques to better understand pancreatic cancer, a notoriously difficult-to-diagnose and treat form of cancer. Dr. McNally’s expertise and Sylvana’s commitment led to groundbreaking insights, making her presentation stand out.
OSSM provided the platform for this opportunity, supporting Sylvana in exploring her scientific interests and excelling at a high level, according to her mother, Camelia.
