That’s a wrap for the OSSM 2023 Summer Institutes for Middle School teachers. With nearly 100 participants combined, the workshops provided a fun, interactive approach to learning new classroom techniques. The 2023 National Teacher of the Year, Rebecka Peterson, also spoke to the math teachers.

We hope you will check back next spring for information on the 2024 Institutes.

The Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics (OSSM) presents the Sarkeys Foundation Summer Math Institute: A Math Program for Middle School Teachers

The Sarkeys Foundation Summer Math Institute is a five-day learning experience held in early June of each year. This fun-filled event takes place at the picturesque OSSM campus in Oklahoma City. We are proud to announce the Sarkeys Foundation and OSSM as sponsors of the summer math institute.

The institute is filled with informative lectures and demonstrations, hands-on sessions and field trips. Nationally recognized speakers and math educators speak at the event. Additional speakers include STEM professionals and professionals completing doctorates in education addressing topics at the forefront of education.

We invite you to be challenged, inspired and better! To conclude the Institute, participants receive bright ideas and bold strategies from the keynote luncheon presentation. All participants receive a stipend and a certificate of attendance. The certificate recognizes a desire to improve mathematics education in schools and also satisfies requirements for professional development.

Meals and housing (for those who wish to stay on campus) are provided.

*Due to limited space, participants are selected from a pool of applicants. Preference is given to applicants who have not previously attended this program. Teachers from rural areas are especially encouraged to apply.

Registration information will be available in early March on the OSSM website. For any questions, please contact Professor Bodenstein@sara.bodenstein@ossm.edu.

Here’s what some of our participants say about the program:

“I learned something from every session….This program will help me walk into the classroom this coming year as a different teacher.”

“The field trips were awesome–very informative.”

“The hands-on activities were things we can take back into the classroom.”

“[The speakers] gave me the most useful info that I can use in my classroom. I loved the field trips. They gave me info for career guidance and some things to consider in my own life.”

The OSSM Summer Science Institute Sponsored by the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, Rob Miner and Phillips 66

The OSSM, OMRF and Phillips 66 sponsor the 2023 Summer Science Institute, which provides Middle School Teachers with knowledge and hands-on experience in Engineering, Geoscience, Life and Physical Sciences. Teachers can increase their science background while taking advantage of new opportunities to deliver knowledge and skills in their classrooms.

This five-day learning experience, full of fun and excitement, will take place on the campus of OSSM near downtown Oklahoma City. Meals and housing (for those who wish to stay on campus) are provided. Participants come away enriched, entertained, inspired, and connected. All attendees receive a $300 stipend and lab supplies ($150 value).

Three field trips to world-class facilities in Oklahoma City (FAA-Civil Aerospace Medical Institute, OMRF, and INTEGRIS Cancer Institute/Oklahoma Proton Center) provide a unique and firsthand learning experience. Additionally, the Institute fosters rigorous learning engagements in a relaxed environment, and participants enjoy recreational activities.
