OSSM Honors Senator Bernice Shedrick

The Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics honors Bernice Shedrick, a visionary leader whose legacy is deeply woven into the school’s history.

A former Oklahoma State Senator, attorney, and lifelong advocate for public education, Senator Shedrick co-authored House Bill 1286, which created OSSM in 1983. She firmly believed that Oklahoma’s brightest students deserve extraordinary opportunities, and her leadership shaped not only an institution, but also generations of scholars who continue to benefit from her vision. In recognition of her lasting impact, the OSSM Library proudly bears her name.

“Alongside Representative Penny Williams, Senator Shedrick spearheaded the political effort to create OSSM,” said President Tony Cornforth. “Without their resolve, OSSM likely would not exist, and we are grateful for their leadership.”

For much of her tenure, Senator Shedrick served as the only woman in the Oklahoma State Senate—leading with integrity, quiet determination, and an unwavering commitment to education and public service.

Senator Shedrick passed away peacefully on January 20, 2026, at the age of 85. OSSM stands as one of her enduring legacies. Her vision lives on in our students, alumni, the campus, and our mission.
