Commencement ceremonies will be held at First United Methodist Church (131 NW 4th St, OKC, OK 73102), May 26th, at 10:00 a.m. Students must arrive at 1st UMC by 9:15 a.m. to prepare for the procession. Seniors on OSSM’s campus at 9:00 a.m. will leave together with Ms. Heigle/Ms. Bonnet to board buses for 1st UMC. If your student will be coming to the ceremony from home, please arrange for her or him to be at 1st UMC by 9:15 a.m. Families and other guests should plan to be seated no later than 9:45 a.m. There is plenty of seating available on a first come, first served basis, although we ask that guests respect the seating needs of persons with disabilities. Please limit programs to two per family.
Graduation practice will be held at 1st UMC on Friday afternoon, May 25th (2-4pm). Seniors will return to the dorm around 4:15 p.m. following graduation practice. The practice is mandatory for seniors to participate in Commencement.
Appropriate attire for graduating young women includes dresses or dark trousers, for young men dress shirt, tie, and dark trousers. Comfortable shoes, suitable for negotiating the steps and risers, are advised.
There will be a breakfast buffet in the Great Hall on the morning of graduation from 7:00 a.m. until 8:30 a.m. Parents and visitors are welcome. The price for breakfast is $5. (Must RSVP to email@example.com by May 18).
OSSM will host refreshments for the graduates, families, and guests immediately following the Commencement Ceremonies in the narthex of 1st UMC. A bus will take graduates from 1st UMC to the Oklahoma Capitol building for a traditional graduation photo and return students to campus promptly. Students will pick up diploma in the Great Hall after they have completed their check out list.
Graduation dinner is planned for seniors and their family members on campus Friday, May 25th.Those who have attended in past years have had a memorable evening. There has been nostalgia, laughter, food, entertainment, and usually a few tears. Following tradition, this year’s event features a meal and photo video presentation; however, this year the video will be looped on a screen in the Great Hall during dinner. Food will be available from 5:30-7:00 p.m. Students and parents must RSVP to attend the dinner. Dress is casual/informal. Please RSVP to firstname.lastname@example.org by May 18). Parents are asked to be off campus by 7:15 pm.
Checking out of the Dorm
Seniors may check out of the residence hall on Friday after graduation practice until 6:30 p.m. if they are planning to spend the night at home. On graduation day, the residence hall will open from 7:00 a.m. until 8:00 a.m. for seniors who wish to complete their check out procedures before graduation.
It will re-open approximately one hour after conclusion of the ceremony for the remainder of the graduates to check out. Graduates must be moved out by 2:00 p.m. Saturday. If you check out after the Commencement ceremony, please clear the residence hall before going to lunch.
Every year some students are assessed a fee to cover damages to their rooms or room furnishings, lost keys, or lost or damaged books. If a fee is assessed we must receive payment at the time of check out. The dorm staff will inspect student rooms and let your senior know if he or she has to pay for damages. If damages occur after the inspection and before the student checks out, these damages must also be paid immediately. Please take a moment to discuss this with your student so there are no surprises at the time of check out. We can accept payment in cash or by check but are unable to accept credit cards. Checks should be payable to Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics.
