West Civ Students Explore Genetics Through Hands-On Lab

Students in the OSSM Western Civilization Recitations combined history and science in a unique genomics lab. They crushed teeth and extracted DNA to look for the CCR5 Delta 32 allele, a genetic variation that provides protection—and immunity—to the Bubonic Plague.

The lab was designed and led by Dr. Kelly Chaves and Dr. Amy Roberson, giving students the chance to experience advanced genetic testing techniques while connecting their work to real-world historical contexts. Few high schools in the nation offer this kind of opportunity, making it an especially exciting week in West Civ!
