OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla., May 11, 2021–Congresswoman Stephanie Bice congratulated the Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics’ National Science Bowl team on Tuesday morning. Held on Zoom, she wished the team of five students best of luck as they wait to hear if they qualified for the Virtual Elimination Tournament to be held on Saturday, May 22. Virtual preliminary rounds were held Monday, May 10.
OSSM’s team of five students qualified for the National Science Bowl national competition after winning the Oklahoma state competition.
“It was indeed a great opportunity for the OSSM NSB team to meet Congresswomen Bice this morning. Her inspirational and supportive view of science education in Oklahoma and in the nation is greatly appreciated by the OSSM community,” said A.K. Fazlur Rahman, Ph.D., professor at OSSM and NSB coach. “OSSM has participated in the competition since 2017. Since then, our students have secured the regional championship and represented Oklahoma in the nation’s capital every year. In 2017, OSSM team won the tie-breaker championship in their division and won $500 for the school.”
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) National Science Bowl® is a nationwide academic competition that tests students’ knowledge in all areas of science and mathematics. Middle and high school student teams from diverse backgrounds are comprised of four students, one alternate, and a teacher who serves as an advisor and coach. These teams face-off in a fast-paced question-and-answer format, being tested on a range of science disciplines including biology, chemistry, Earth science, physics, energy, and math.
