GENERAL INFORMATION

PERSONAL: Born in Pittsburgh PA, 12/22/63 I am married and have three kids; Nolan, Ryan, and Tayler Lynn; yes, I am a huge Lynn Nolan (Nolan) Ryan, Jr. fan,

and I love baseball (big surprise). Favorite team: Texas Rangers

I also like: Star Trek.

TITLE: Professor of Biology and member of the Biology Department

EDUCATION: B.S. in Microbiology from Oklahoma State University in 1986 Ph.D in Botany in 1991, also from Oklahoma State University, Department of Botany.

MOST RECENT RESEARCH EXPERIENCE: I worked for three years at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation as a Post-doc studying the genetic regulation of of DNA transfer in the bacterium E. coli.

MOST RECENT TEACHING EXPERIENCE: I joined the faculty at OSSM in the fall of 1994 and taught General Biology, Botany, and Invertebrate Zoology. In the spring I taught Botany, Vertebrate Zoology and Ecology. Currently, I have branched out and expanded my horizons; I am teaching Botany, Invertebrate Zoology, Genetics, and two directed studies (one in Plant Taxonomy with Jennifer Mann and Danny Tracy, and the other in Microbiology withVertebrate Zoology, Botany, and Ecology next semester.

RESEARCH INTERESTS: Molecular, biochemical, and genetic analysis of metabolic and developmental pathways; conjugal DNA transfer in bacteria; structure/function analysis of bacterial response regulators.

RESEARCH EXPERIENCE:

(1991-1994) Postdoctoral research on the genetic control of conjugation in E. coli under the direction of Dr. Philip Silverman at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation.

(1987-1991) Graduate research on biotin synthesis in Arabidopsis thaliana under the supervision of Dr. David W. Meinke at Oklahom State University.

(1984-1986) Undergraduate research in organic chemistry directed toward the synthesis of new drugs and the studying of petroleum maturation under the supervision of Dr. Richard A. Bunce at Oklahoma State University in the Department of Chemistry.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE:

(1994-present) Professor of Biology, Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics.
(1990) Genetics Tutor, Oklahoma State University.
(1986) Graduate Teaching Assistant, Microbiology, Oklahoma State University.

  • Biochemistry Grand Awards Judge at 41st Annual Tulsa International Science and Engineering Fair, 1990
  • Coordinated community service projects between OSSM students and Myriad Botanical Gardens / Crystal Bridge, 1995
  • Member of OSSM's E-Team, conducting plant biology demonstrations at Oklahoma elementary schools, 1994-present
  • Held workshop on discussion of "Gene Therapy for Teaching Molecular Biology" at Stilwell High School during their teacher inservice day, spring, 1995
  • Trainer for Oklahoma branch of The American Lung Association's "High School Heroes" program
