As reported in The Oklahoman in an article headlined "Early childhood education gets power boost" by Carmen Perez Snyder, Capitol Bureau: In testimony before the Oklahoma legislature in the Spring of 2004. A partial transcription follows:

". . . Gov. Brad Henry has requested $2 million to help fund the program, but legislative action is pending on the measure.  To drum up support, Henry enlisted the help of former North Carolina Gov. James B. Hunt, one of the nations leading advocated of early childhood education.

"I've seen this Legislature take on challenges before," Hunt said during a speech to a joint session of the Legislature after the news conference.  "In the 1980's I spoke to another joint session of your Legislature when you were debating the creation of a science and math high school.  Today that school is the best high school  -- public or private -- in the nation. . ."
